Is it just me or does it seem a bit strange that the same congress that can't balance the budget can change time?  This year, despite how it will confuse our computer calendars, congress has decided we're leaping into daylight savings time early to "save energy."  Whose energy?  I'm exhausted just thinking about how tired I'm going to be when I have to get up an hour earlier to go to work.  Even more tiring is thinking about what congress might decide to change next

Still, having some additional daylight hours could mean more time for the local road crews to finish the road projects they've started.  More daylight could mean more time for city and county planners to take a good look at what we're losing every time a big developer decides to raze an orchard or fill in some wetlands for some more apartments or homes.  More daylight could mean a chance for us all to take a good look as a county where we've been and where we're going.  And that spirit, the one that has us writing letters, calling friends and reminding them that their votes and opinions count, and doing what we can to ensure healthy neighborhoods, is one thing congress can't change.--well, that and the crow of the rooster in our neighborhood who *never* has been able to figure out when it's really time to get up!

To my thinking (and I've heard other equally brilliant people espouse this idea), the ONLY logical solution to the dilemma is this:

Move it 1/2 hour (in the middle) and LEAVE IT THERE!

This back-and-forth business is ludicrous - especially when you can't tell from one year to the next WHEN they're going to make the switch. Years ago, it was the last Sunday in October and the last Sunday in April. Then the change to DST switched to the first Sunday in April. Now it's the second Sunday in March. Come on already!

The "more time for road projects" argument doesn't wash, valeka, because all they're doing is giving up an hour of daylight in the morning for an hour in the evening. Actually, if you think about it, more daylight in the morning would be better for road construction.

You can bet there is some financial advantage for a few somewhere in the "mix." Someone more astute than I will probably offer a reasonable explanation. For the time being, I can only state that changing our clocks twice is a year is bad enough. Do we really need bureaucratic meddling to make this anachronism even more tedious?

I'm with Neanderthal. I guess we'll just have to play "wait and see" to determine if it's a good idea.

We are the only country (i belive) that does this time change called Daylight Savings. We are totaly off with the rest of the world. There was an article I read that was like a debate over Daylights Saving. I kinda felt as though it is just a idea that helped in the 70s. But is it going to help us now? What are the statistics? Maybe we should try and go a year or two off DST.... See what it is like....

If I recall, Daylight Saving Time was inacted during the Second World War (1941-1945) to make better use of daylight for defense factories, etc. It has long outlasted its' usefullness, if that is the case. It probably is time to go back to Standard Time and leave it there.

neanderthal, I did not know that little bit of time trivia. If that's the case then let's do away with it completely. Never would I have imagined that being the reason...for the pain in the tush time changing.

There is another angle along these lines. Who is going to "bite the bullet" if D.S.T. or Standard Time is chosen? Will emplyees or management gain or lose the one hour gained or lost? Just a thought! lol

Here's an idea folks...

What do you say that we start a massive letter-writing campaign to our respective legislators?

Not that they ever listen to their constituents anyway but it can't hurt!

Anyone know?: IF I change my pre-2005 PC's clock this Sunday, will it change-by itself-again at the end of this month, when DST was originally planned?
