Edward Allen Covington has apparently confessed to the murder and mutilation of the Lutz mom, her two children and the family dog.

Covington is the son of a Hillsborough Detention Deputy and worked as a detention officer at one time.

He was Baker acted (a mentally unstable person who may harm himself) in connection with a call which discovered he had killed and dismembered three cats in his kitchen. He bashed in the skull of one of the kittens on the side of the sink. All were mutilated. He was sitting on the floor crying and delusional.

The questions begs, why was he not prosecuted for this crime?

Would this not be the REDDEST of flags for the authorities?

It is well known that serial killers nearly always have a history of animal torture and abuse.

Why was he not charged and prosecuted?

Could that have saved the lives of  Lisa, Savannah and Zackery?

He apparently was smoking crack cocaine and his father claims he is Bipolar.

Many questions remain unanswered.

Give me a pair of pliers, a can of Sprite and 10 minutes with him.

Sprite is pretty bad, but does it constitute torture?

And there's no telling how many like him are allowed to go free even in this area because of weak laws and non-caring lawyers who only care if their "client" is free or not, never mind that they can snap at any minute.

Very, very scary that there are probably countless others like him running around. Obviously, this animal will get death. Let's just make it quick and not let him lounge around on death row for decades. I've got a few pretty good ideas about what to do with him. Kind of like what Vittorio has in mind!!

I'm sorry to say I think he might have a chance at the insanity plea.
So he might not get the death penalty.

Louie, do you think he will try the insanity defense? I don't know if drug induced violence or bipolar will be an insanity defense..but it will probably get him life and not the death penalty. We will see? My thoughts are of those poor little children. What was this woman thinking of cohabitating with this animal? She could make her choses but those children could not make that decision and relied ont their mother for comfort and security. From the reports he was trouble when she went into this romantic interlude. I will never understand how women can put their children in harm's way.

Using the insanity defense is rather difficult, and it is even more difficult to win on it. The Florida statute has a pretty high hurdle for it to work:

775.027 Insanity defense.--

(1) AFFIRMATIVE DEFENSE.--All persons are presumed to be sane. It is an affirmative defense to a criminal prosecution that, at the time of the commission of the acts constituting the offense, the defendant was insane. Insanity is established when:

(a) The defendant had a mental infirmity, disease, or defect; and

(b) Because of this condition, the defendant:

1. Did not know what he or she was doing or its consequences; or

2. Although the defendant knew what he or she was doing and its consequences, the defendant did not know that what he or she was doing was wrong.

Mental infirmity, disease, or defect does not constitute a defense of insanity except as provided in this subsection.

(2) BURDEN OF PROOF.--The defendant has the burden of proving the defense of insanity by clear and convincing evidence.
